According to a study, published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, those people, who drank 7 ounces of fermented milk containing Lactobacillus gasseri every day, had significantly lost weight.

There was another study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition in 2014, which found that another strain of Lactobacillus named Lactobacillus rhamnosus also helps losing weight. Those people, who take probiotics along with low-calorie diet lose 50% more weight than the control group who take a placebo pill.

The probiotics work by inhibiting the dietary fat absorptions and increasing the amount of fat excreted in feces. These types of probiotics, such as Lactobacillus, help by harvesting fewer calories from the food. There are certain probiotics, which fight obesity in different ways-

  • They also increase the level of protein ANGPTL4, which burns down the fat.

The probiotics increase the quantity of butyrate (a kind of fatty acid) inside the intestine. Butyrate helps to increase the release of the GLP-1 hormone, which regulates the production of insulin inside the body. The people with higher GLP-1 level could metabolize the calories more than those, who have a lower GLP-1 level.

Two different bacteria strains named Lactobacillus paracasei and Bifidobacterium longum, let the body secrete a distinct protein named ANGPTL-4 (Angiopoietin-like-4), which regulates the accumulation of triglycerides in fat tissue. It leads to the reduction of the fat storage inside the body. Some studies have found that the patients who are obese and diabetic, exhibits a lower number of Bifidobacterium.

A study was done on the results of consuming yogurts, which contained either Lactobacillus amylovorus or L. fermentum. After 6 weeks, it was seen that the body fat of the participants has reduced by 3% – 4% respectively. When the people stopped taking the probiotics, the body fat started returning. We can conclude that people might need constant consumption if the probiotics to maintain the body weight.

There was another study done with Lactobacillus gasseri for 12 weeks. After 12 weeks, it was seen that the abdominal fat has been reduced by 5.8% and the body weight by 1.4%.

There are certain types of good bacteria that can help you maintain the weight as it prevents you from accumulating fat. Preventing the weight gain is more important than losing weight after you have put the weight back on.
