Do Probiotics Help with Weight Loss
What are Probiotics
Probiotics are good bacteria that are similar to those that already live inside our body.
The lower digestive tract of a human being has a diversified community of many bacteria. In fact, our intestine alone has more number of bacteria than the number of cells present in our body.
However, we all have to remember that, not every bacteria present inside our body are good for our health. Many studies have revealed that unhealthy diet and lifestyle increase the number of bad bacteria inside our body. It can wreck our body that leads to weight gain, constipation, diarrhea, and skin conditions.
Where Do You Get Probiotics
The dietary source of the healthy bacteria is fermented foods, such as yogurts, cheese, Lactobacillus milk, and kimchi. You can also intake probiotics as a supplement available in a drug store. It improves our digestive health, immunity and heart health.
Do Probiotics Help with Weight Loss
What is the role of probiotics in weight loss and body weight management?
The friendly bacteria present inside our digestive system produces many important nutrients including vitamin K and B. It also breaks down those indigestible fibers, which our body cannot digest.
There are two main families of bacteria inside the gut, named Firmicutes and Bacteroides.
The body weight is related to the balance between two of these families of bacteria. It’s found in both human and animal studies that the people with normal weight have different families of gut bacteria than the obese people.
It is established that the obese people had more Firmicutes and fewer Bacteroides compared to the people with average weight. These studies suggest that the probiotics play a commanding role in weight regulation.
According to a study, published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, those people, who drank 7 ounces of fermented milk containing Lactobacillus gasseri every day, had significantly lost weight.
There was another study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition in 2014, which found that another strain of Lactobacillus named Lactobacillus rhamnosus also helps losing weight. Those people, who take probiotics along with low-calorie diet lose 50% more weight than the control group who take a placebo pill.
How the Probiotics Work
The probiotics work by inhibiting the dietary fat absorptions and increasing the amount of fat excreted in feces. These types of probiotics, such as Lactobacillus, help by harvesting fewer calories from the food. There are certain probiotics, which fight obesity in different ways-
- Probiotics help in releasing the appetite-reducing hormone GLP1 that burns the calories and fat.
- They also increase the level of protein ANGPTL4, which burns down the fat.
- Probiotics work by reducing the gut system inflammation by improving the gut health. It also reduces the brain inflammation, therefore aiding to fight bad health and obesity.
The Good Bacteria Can Help Your Body to Absorb Less Fat
Lactobacillus gasseri can be naturally found in the digestive tract.
When consumed externally, it colonizes our lower intestine and changes the environment of the digestive tracts and waste products.
These bacteria are found to increase the size of the fat molecules. Thus, it makes your body absorb less fat. It also makes the excess fat molecule to get out from the body through the excretory system.
Probiotics affect the hormones, which regulate obesity
The probiotics increase the quantity of butyrate (a kind of fatty acid) inside the intestine. Butyrate helps to increase the release of the GLP-1 hormone, which regulates the production of insulin inside the body. A study has proven that administration of GLP-1 in the body from outside reduces the body weight. The people with higher GLP-1 level could metabolize the calories more than those, who have a lower GLP-1 level.
Two different bacteria strains named Lactobacillus paracasei and Bifidobacterium longum, let the body secrete a distinct protein named ANGPTL-4 (Angiopoietin-like-4), which regulates the accumulation of triglycerides in fat tissue. It leads to the reduction of the fat storage inside the body. Some studies have found that the patients who are obese and diabetic, exhibits a lower number of Bifidobacterium.
The probiotics reduce body fat and belly fat
A study was done on the results of consuming yogurts, which contained either Lactobacillus amylovorus or L. fermentum. After 6 weeks, it was seen that the body fat of the participants has reduced by 3% – 4% respectively. When the people stopped taking the probiotics, the body fat started returning. We can conclude that people might need constant consumption if the probiotics to maintain the body weight.
There was another study done with Lactobacillus gasseri for 12 weeks. After 12 weeks, it was seen that the abdominal fat has been reduced by 5.8% and the body weight by 1.4%.
The probiotics help to maintain healthy weight
There are certain types of good bacteria that can help you maintain the weight as it prevents you from accumulating fat. Preventing the weight gain is more important than losing weight after you have put the weight back on.
Taking probiotics daily not only ensure your weight loss but also makes sure that your body is getting the essential nutrients from the foods you eat every day.
Probiotics are not magic pills, which will make you lose weight in a fortnight. They only help to make your body function more accurate by boosting immunity.
